bite me
I’ve got a case of letting you get away with changing all the rules in your sick and twisted games. All your grinding paralyzes me from thinking straight. I need to kick you out on your prissy grinning face.
Bite me. Come on I’m down on my knees, come on and bite me. My bad jokes need a laugh. Bite me. I’ve got you craving for my flavor and I want you all to taste me (uh oh) so beautifully bad.
You are addicting like reality on bad TV. I’m pretty sure your presence is making me dumb. If I’m a moron, take a look at your friends… at least I never said “I love you” without crossing my hands.
Bite me. If you’re so perfect then PLEASE, come down and bite me. My bad jokes need a laugh. Bite me, I’ve got you craving for my flavor and I want you all to taste me UH OH so beautifully bad.
I don’t know how to say NO to you. Lick me up, spit me out to the floor below in a mile high drop from your pedestal throne. I am weightless as the impact explodes. I’m numb in my heart, my mouth, my bones.
So let’s see you bite me.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve had Jono Diener of The Swellers featured with a new Contributor Blog, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him back. In his new blog, Jono tackles the subject of reviews and reviewers and it makes for a great read. The Swellers also just released a fantastic album called Good For Me that everyone should check out and purchase here if you’re into it. Make sure to read the full blog and enjoy!
A Review On Reviews And Reviewers
This is a pretty relevant time for me to write a piece on this subject. My band’s new album, Good For Me, just came out on Fueled By Ramen Records. It’s a joyous occasion celebrating 2 years of hard work and getting to work with producer/punk legend Bill Stevenson of Black Flag/Descendents fame. This is our fourth release on a label and we’ve had a wide variety of reviews over the last 9 years of our existence as The Swellers. The funny part about ALL OF THIS is that we actually received all awesome reviews on this new album. So you’re probably wondering, “Why the hell is he writing this? Wait, more importantly, why am I reading this?!” Well, Metaphorical Person, those are very valid questions! The reason I’m writing this to you is very simple. Your opinion should not be based on one person’s thoughts. You should always try to experience things for yourself first. This is what I like to call, “forming your own opinion.” I know not many people are into the idea, but trust me, it’s well worth it.
If you’re in a band, you know the drill. You bust your ass working on a record, you send the record to magazines/websites to check it out, you promote the hell out of it, and RIGHT before it’s coming out you start getting reviews. That’s right, you get the email in your inbox or the call from a band member/manager and in the back of your head you’re crossing your fingers for some rad score or high number of stars. So you dig into the first review! First you’ll read the introduction talking a bit about your past and how that compares to your current musical endeavor. Next you’ll notice what they thought of each song whether it goes in order, or it groups them stylistically or mentions the message behind each song. They’ll awkwardly describe each member of the band’s role in the songs, even if it’s not a stand out part (“Steve totally played EVERY NOTE on the bass in that song!”). It’s oddly formulaic, but that’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Then you finally get to the score. Whether it’s out of 5 stars, the number 10 or a percentage, it’s going to put its mark on your record potentially forever. This is where your reaction varies between: “Boys, we really did it this time!” and “Are you serious? That is complete bullshit!”

The Swellers went about the bonus material on our album “Good For Me” a little differently than we expected. We could have just added some unused songs (we’re saving those for later), but we decided that we should record acoustic versions of two of the songs on the album. We had ZERO time at home or in the studio to make this happen, so we recorded it while on the Take Action tour in about six different locations all over the country.
First off, I’ll introduce you to Bryan Beeler, our tour manager/recording engineer/guitar tech extraordinaire. You may know him from being the best looking/most talented guy in the band Cinematic Sunrise and making all sorts of records for artists out of his studio in Northville, MI. Beeler was my partner in crime for making these songs happen.
Acoustic guitars along with stomps and claps were recorded at a friend’s studio space in Pennsylvania, lead vocals were done at my parents’ old house that was for sale in North Carolina, and backup vocals were done at our friends’ house in Dallas, TX. Next came synth strings/keyboards, which I recorded in Bayside’s hotel room while everyone was swimming in Albuquerque, NM on a day off. Then, Beeler took nearly an entire day editing and mixing everything in Arizona. He even missed our show because he got so into it. The result was awesome, and we did the final mix edits sitting in the van in Sacramento, CA, plugged in straight through our van’s crappy sound system.
We sent the two tracks to our label and management and they loved it as much as we did. We all thought, “Wow, no one would ever know we recorded these songs in six different locations,” which is great since it sounds so solid, but kind of sucks since it’s a such a cool story and it may go unnoticed. So, there’s the story, now you know! “Inside My Head” and “The Best I Ever Had” are two of our favorite songs on the record and these acoustic versions give the songs a whole new feel. We hope you dig!

empty house blog
day 1 of 6 in an empty house. I’m too much of a people person for this. On the bright side, I put a recording setup in the kitchen and mic’ed the entire house. Instruments everywhere. Writing, writing, writing, always writing.
Anyway, lonesome + computer use = blogging. Here are some things I’ve been up to lately. Dah dah dahmmmmm.
- the usual (get that out of the way)
- Arrested Development
- rocking out to The Swellers Good For Me (2011) and The Fray. The Swellers are solid and fresh, gonna be huge very soon. Would love to see them live.
- tricking my dog into taking his sick-dog pills. It’s harder than it sounds… he is way smarter than I is
- sucking every last minute out of being 21
Mix date for Hey Harbor’s first album is on July 5th. The tracks sound awesome, cannot wait to show everybody. Now we’re working on the photoshoot and other bells & whistles.

Can’t make it out to UHF Music? Click HERE to download their new album on iTunes! It won’t be signed by the guys but, it’ll sound just as good.
